Independence Day honors the ratification of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. July 4th is a beloved holiday. AAA reported that 77 million Americans travelled over the holiday weekend. While this holiday is celebrated with food and fireworks, there are some important lessons for Human Resources (HR).

  1. Clear communication is needed for organizational direction.
The Lee Resolution declared independence from Britain on July 2, 1776. This resolution signalled the intention of the colonies. The Declaration of Independence was formally signed two days later.
  2. Input from different functions is essential for strong teamworking. Delegates attended from 12 of the 13 colonies.
Georgia did not send delegates because they were fighting with neighboring Native American tribes. It is important to gather input from different stakeholders, especially when managing large changes.
  3. Make formal plans to support organization change.
Many changes occurred after the Declaration of Independence was signed. The new states wrote their own constitutions, which denounced British authority. It also reduced the barriers to voting for free, white males. Some states granted more religious freedoms by not having an official state religion. General George Washington made it mandatory for his soldiers to be inoculated against smallpox, and this drastically reduced the death rate from this virus. “All men are created equal” has been an important statement for the rights of women and slaves.
