There are several important lessons we can learn from the historical origins of Thanksgiving. The Puritan settlers on the Mayflower ship landed at Cape Cod, Massachusetts in 1620. They formed an agreement with the Wampanoag tribe in March 1621 for mutual protection. That fall, four settlers went hunting for a celebration. Their native neighbors thought they were preparing for war but soon realized they were collecting meat for a party. Some Wampanoag men contributed to the feast with deer meet.
The first Thanksgiving lasted for three days. English settlers ate with their native neighbors. They enjoyed deer, corn, roasted meat and shellfish. The celebration included dancing, singing and games. The first religious Thanksgiving Day on record was two years later in 1623. The colonist thanked God for the rain that ended a two-month drought.
